Portage Lake / Onekama Michigan
Harbor Guide
A little History
It was not always connected to Lake Michigan with a channel, but was 4 feet
higher and connected with a little stream. Around 130 years ago, an evil lumber
baron from Chicago was
messing with the lake depth by damming up the creek for his lumber mill.
He was untouchable as long as he didn't come into Michigan.
The locals were pissed about this, so one day they dug a ditch to Lake Michigan
at the western most end of Portage Lake. With a bif Wooosh the two were
connected. It was a big deal in the
Manistee Inquirer at the time as a lot of trees and stuff got swept way out into
Lake Michigan. The locals freaked because they thought they might lose the
whole lake. It worked out okay though, and the lumber baron was screwed. This
